Despite the EU's advanced waste management and ambitious recycling targets, studies show the presence of plastic and micro-plastic pollution in the rivers of countries in the Central European region. Preventing a new threat is a challenge for water quality. At present, there are no standard methods and data on plastic pollution in the rivers of the Danube basin that would facilitate coordinated action by water management authorities and allow for cooperation with other sectors needed to stop pollution. The Tid(y) Up project, supported by the Interreg Danube Transnational Program, focused on reducing plastic pollution and improving water quality on the Tisza River.
The project partners will develop and launch integrated action programs, consult relevant stakeholders and initiate long-term cross-border and cross-sectoral cooperation to eliminate plastic pollution of rivers. The project seeks to reduce plastic pollution with a wide range of tools: developing scientific measures to standardize methods for estimating pollution levels, making recommendations for developing standard measurement and analysis methods, field expeditions, pilot measures to identify and clean up contaminated sites, and education on prevention and awareness-raising measures.
